Morgan Neville’s acclaimed documentary, Won’t You Be My Neighbor?, will soon be available on both Blu-ray and DVD from Universal Pictures Home Entertainment.
I’m convinced, after watching this poignant, heartfelt film, that the world would be a much better place if everyone could be like Fred Rogers. This was a man of unwavering integrity, someone who deeply cared for his friends and family, as well as the children that he reached out to via his hit television show, “Mister Rogers Neighborhood”.
The psychological and emotional well-being of children meant a great deal to Rogers, and he even opted out of going to seminary so that he could focus on his goal of reaching children by way of educational entertainment. His show was more than just a cheap masquerade of morals and family values – it was unbelievably radical for it’s time. Tackling subjects like divorce and assassination, as well as welcoming people of color onto his show in the midst of racial turmoil, Fred Rogers had much more on his mind than meets the eye. He wasn’t just out to mold the minds of the young, but to change and to heal the hearts of the world entire.
Morgan Neville covers much ground in a seemingly brisk running time – you won’t want this beautiful thing to end – offering much insight into the man behind that warm smile, even touching on the very real emotional demons that Rogers dealt with himself. This is a film that will encourage you to seek out the good in people. It’s the very kind of film that we need right now in these tumultuous times. For every Donald Trump, there is a Mr. Rogers. And spending time in the company of the people in this film will remind you to never take that for granted.
Won’t You Be My Neighbor will soon be available for purchase on Blu-ray and DVD on September 4th.
